Madrid/Spain Update

Church planting, Commission, Going to the nations, International March 22, 2017

One of the greatest privileges of church planting is that you get to clearly experience the fruit of your labours. Iglesia de Cristo Salvador Madrid (Church of Christ the Saviour), the first Commission church in Spain, was publically launched in Nov 2015. Much like the vast majority of the mass of an iceberg lies hidden beneath the surface, the emergence of this new church was the culmination of a long and unseen effort on the part of team members and sending churches. What started as a dream resulted in the commitment of team members to make sacrifices, take risks, move houses and country, learn the language, find jobs, develop new friendships, serve and give in countless ways. The result is that a community that did not exist before has now been birthed and starting to live and proclaim the gospel to people who would never have heard or experienced it otherwise.

On that initial foundation laid by those first heroes who took such risks God has started to build a congregation made up of many young, creative people and consistently added Spaniards and Spanish speakers. We have had the privilege of baptising 9 people and seen the emergence of an embryonic leadership team. What excites us is that Jesus has already started to birth new dreams in our hearts. Principally, we are praying and starting planning towards the planting of a second congregation in Madrid in the next few years. Like the iceberg, there is little surface evidence of this new work, but the prayers and effort have been initiated and we are confident in Jesus’ faithfulness to bring it to completion.

2016 also saw the launch of a second Commission church plant in Spain; Iglesia de Cristo Vencedor (Church of Christ the Overcomer). Andy & Donna Walker started this Spanish speaking congregation in Huércal Overa, Almería and have seen baptisms and witnessed God’s sovereign provision in growth and a local venue.

While Spain is a very new nation for Commission churches, we have had the great privilege of witnessing God bring forth something wonderful from nothing. These first fruits have come through the giving, obedience and service on the part of faithful men and women, as well as God’s sovereign grace. Faith for the future is a natural response to these first fruits and we are believing God for the next steps as well as our ongoing part in ‘thousands of lives transformed, through hundreds of churches in tens of nations.’
