Church Planting in Wakefield
This year Catalyst will be planting a new church into the city of Wakefield in West Yorkshire. In 2018 God spoke prophetically to leaders in the Catalyst team about church planting into towns and cities in the north of England, and Wakefield was the first place where He was clearly directing. Wakefield is a historic city of approximately one hundred thousand people, but the wider borough, which incorporates towns such as Pontefract and Castleford, makes it one of the UK’s larger cities with a population of over three hundred thousand. It is a fast growing city and has a large scale housebuilding project underway.
David and Karen Lavery, who have been a part of the leadership team at NewSpring Church in Ossett for the past eight years will be heading up the new church plant, and plan to move home into the south of the Wakefield in the summer of 2019. Both David and Karen have had a growing sense of God’s calling to plant a new church in the city for almost two years, and the news that the Catalyst team were feeling the same way was an answer to prayer.
“At the Catalyst Festival in 2018 there was an offering being taken for church planting, and we felt a real sense of faith that we should sow into this offering. Within months we found out that the the Catalyst apostolic team believed that God was directing them to plant in the North of England, and specifically Wakefield. When we heard this our hearts leapt. We knew that we were meant to be a part of this new thing that God was doing in our city.”
